TURP for BPH

The Gold-Standard Surgical Treatment for Prostate Enlargement

Overview

Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) remains the established gold-standard surgical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and has an outstanding long-term evidence base. Mr Sheikh performs TURP at Lancashire using the latest bipolar resection technology — passing a resectoscope through the urethra to surgically remove excess prostate tissue and restore normal urinary flow. TURP is recommended for men with moderate to severe BPH symptoms, particularly where the prostate gland is significantly enlarged or where medical management has been unsuccessful.

Treatment Benefits

Patients typically remain in hospital for one to two nights following TURP. A urinary catheter is removed within 24–48 hours post-operatively. Full recovery is usually achieved within 4–6 weeks, during which heavy lifting and strenuous activity should be avoided.
A pre-operative assessment is required, including blood tests, urine culture and anaesthetic review. Mr Sheikh’s team provides detailed post-operative instructions and ensures every patient is fully prepared before the day of surgery.
